Adobe released Project Indigo, a free camera app for iPhone, on June 14, 2025. The app utilises computational photography to produce stunning, natural-looking photos.
Developed by Adobe Labs under Marc Levoy, former Google Pixel camera innovator, and Florian Kainz, Project Indigo captures up to 32 underexposed frames per shot, merging them for superior dynamic range and low noise, per Adobe’s blog. It offers:
- SLR-Like Aesthetic: Delivers natural tones, avoiding over-processed “smartphone looks,” compatible with Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom.
- Pro Controls: Manual adjustments for focus, ISO, shutter speed, white balance (with temperature/tint), and burst frame count, plus a Long Exposure mode for creative effects.
- AI Innovations: Features like AI Denoise, Remove Reflections, and multi-frame super-resolution for sharper digital zoom, showcased in Technology Previews.
Available on iPhone 12 Pro/Pro Max, 13 Pro/Pro Max, and all iPhone 14+ models (best on iPhone 15 Pro+), it requires no Adobe login, enhancing accessibility.

Released on the App Store, Project Indigo serves as a testbed for Adobe’s flagship products. It is currently developing potential features such as portrait mode and video recording. An Android version is planned, although no timeline has been confirmed. Levoy and Kainz aim to bridge the gap between casual and professional photography by integrating advancements in AI and computational technology.

According to Digital Photography Review, Indigo’s computational approach, which builds on Levoy’s Pixel legacy, challenges the default iPhone cameras, particularly at 10x zoom. Although some devices have experienced overheating issues, Indigo’s free model and integration with Lightroom help establish Adobe as a leader in mobile imaging.
