A fresh Adam Back Satoshi Nakamoto claim is drawing attention online after a new investigation argued that the British cryptographer may be Bitcoin’s elusive creator. The report, published on Wednesday, April 8, says journalists reviewed thousands of emails and online posts while comparing Adam Back’s writing style with Satoshi Nakamoto’s white paper and early crypto-era communications.

The investigation was led by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist John Carreyrou and Dylan Freedman. Their report argues that Adam Back, a well-known figure in the early Bitcoin movement, matches the profile of the person who created the world’s first cryptocurrency.

The investigation points to Back’s deep technical knowledge as a central reason for the claim. It also highlights his long-standing role in cryptography and the cypherpunk movement, both of which shaped the ideas behind Bitcoin.

Why does the report point to Adam Back

Adam Back is a British cryptographer, cypherpunk, and the CEO of Blockstream. He is also known for creating Hashcash, a proof-of-work system often cited as an important precursor to Bitcoin mining.

One of the key points raised in the report is a 1997 Cypherpunk newsletter. The article says Back outlined five core features that later appeared in Bitcoin, years before Satoshi Nakamoto published the white paper.

Blockstream CEO Adam Back sat down with Yahoo Finance to deny claims made by the New York Times that he is the founder of bitcoin.

The journalists also reportedly linked Back’s academic background to Bitcoin’s early development. His doctoral thesis at the University of Exeter was written in C++, the same programming language used for the first version of the Bitcoin software.

Adam Back has denied being Satoshi

Despite the renewed speculation, Adam Back has repeatedly denied that he is Satoshi Nakamoto. He rejected similar claims again in the HBO documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery.

The text adds that other names have surfaced before, including Canadian software developer Peter Todd, who also denied the theory. That pattern reflects a long-running reality in crypto: many people have been linked to Bitcoin’s creator, but no theory has been definitively proven.

The mystery remains one of the biggest unanswered questions in crypto. There has been no direct communication from Satoshi Nakamoto since April 2011. It also states that wallets linked to Satoshi hold nearly 1.1 million Bitcoin, valued at about $77 billion based on reported valuation.
