Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Bill Kramar has publicly addressed the recent criticism from actor Sean Penn. Penn’s strong comments, in which he accused the Academy of “cowardice,” created significant discussion within Hollywood.
Kramar faced a question about the remarks during an appearance at the Marrakech Film Festival. He did not respond emotionally or defensively, stating he would not share his immediate personal reaction to avoid creating a separate headline.

Instead, the 59-year-old CEO discussed his general approach to handling feedback. He explained that the Academy represents a vast and diverse membership of approximately 11,000 film professionals.
“Everyone has different views about films, awards, and the organization itself,” Kramar noted. He emphasized that his role involves listening with an “open heart,” even when comments are harsh or delivered publicly. He framed this openness as a core duty. “Serving the film world meant taking every opinion seriously,” he stated.
Viewing Criticism as a Catalyst for Growth
Kramar acknowledged that the Academy cannot resolve every issue immediately. However, he stressed that “every voice still mattered.”
According to the CEO, even upsetting comments can serve a constructive purpose. They can guide the institution in improving or adopting new perspectives. “These tough moments could turn into lessons,” he said.
Sean Penn’s original critique claimed the Academy limits imagination and cultural expression. Kramar’s response indicated he respected the criticism’s intent and viewed it as a learning opportunity rather than a provocation for argument. This exchange adds to the broader, ongoing conversation about how the Academy should evolve and respond to a rapidly changing film industry.
