The world of Game of Thrones is set to expand once again with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a highly anticipated prequel series scheduled to premiere on January 18, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.
Based on Tales of Dunk and Egg by George R. R. Martin, the series takes a markedly different direction from earlier stories set in Westeros. Instead of epic wars and dragon-filled battles, the narrative centres on a more intimate journey shaped by friendship, honour, and adventure.
The story unfolds nearly 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when the Targaryen dynasty still rules the Iron Throne and dragons are fading into legend. The series follows Ser Duncan the Tall, a wandering hedge knight guided by a strong moral code, and his young squire Egg, who is secretly Aegon Targaryen, a prince destined for greatness.

As Dunk and Egg travel across the Seven Kingdoms, they move through tournaments, rural villages, and royal courts. Along the way, they encounter nobles and commoners alike, gradually becoming entangled in political intrigue and hidden power struggles. Their evolving mentor-student relationship forms the emotional core of the series.
Peter Claffey leads the cast as Ser Duncan the Tall, with Dexter Sol Ansell portraying Egg. The supporting ensemble includes Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Daniel Ings, Tanzyn Crawford, and Sam Spruell.
Season one will feature six episodes, delivering a tightly focused narrative while preserving the depth and atmosphere that define the Game of Thrones universe. HBO has already renewed the series for a second season, underscoring strong confidence in its long-term potential.
