A 5.5-magnitude earthquake rattled Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 12:30 pm.
The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) reported the quake’s depth at 12 kilometres. Its epicentre lay 60 kilometres northwest of Rawalpindi. Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey measured it at 5.0 with a 39.2-kilometer depth.
No damage or injuries have been reported, so authorities are monitoring closely. The Pakistan earthquake caused concern but no immediate harm.
At 11:54 a.m., a 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border, according to the NSMC. The earthquake had a depth of 88 kilometres and was felt in several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Swat, Mardan, and Mansehra. Additionally, a 3.8-magnitude jolt shook the same border region at 11:26 am. That quake’s depth was 109 kilometres.

Earthquakes are frequent in Pakistan due to its tectonic setting. However, shallow quakes like this one can raise concerns. Since no damage occurred, residents can feel relieved for now. Nonetheless, preparedness remains essential.
