North Korea has announced that approximately 1.4 million young people, including students and youth league officials, have joined or rejoined the military this week.
According to a report by the state-run KCNA, these young recruits are prepared to engage in what they describe as a “sacred war of destroying the enemy with the arms of the revolution.”
This significant enlistment claim arrives amid escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula. North Korea asserts that this massive mobilization occurred over just two days, marking a stark response to international pressures and ongoing conflicts with South Korea.
In a similar assertion last year, North Korean media claimed that many citizens had volunteered to join the military to combat perceived threats from the United States.
Tensions further intensified when North Korea destroyed parts of inter-Korean transit routes on its side of the heavily fortified border this Tuesday. This act led to South Korea’s military firing warning shots in response. Additionally, North Korea has accused Seoul of intruding on its airspace with drones and has responded to anti-regime propaganda balloons from the South with its launches since May.
The KCNA report ominously noted, “If a war breaks out, the ROK will be wiped off the map. As it wants a war, we are willing to put an end to its existence,” highlighting the severe and ongoing strain between the two Koreas.
