Senate Chairman as well as Senior PPP leader Raza Rabbani has refused to head a parliamentary committee to probe the issue of Panama Leaks, a reference to massive leaks of tax documents that also include names of Pakistan’s ruling family.
The PPP stalwart said spearheading such a committee would create a controversy of conflict of interest since he was custodian of the upper house of the parliament.
Opposition leader in the National Assembly and also a senior leader of the PPP Syed Khursheed Shah had suggested Raza Rabbani’s name to head the parliamentary committee.
Excusing himself from assuming the position, Raza Rabbani said he lacks the expertise required to probe while-collar crimes. “Expertise in probing white collar crimes are required to investigate Panama Leaks, which I lack,” he said.
“It will not be appropriate for me to be part of this committee as chairman of Senate,” the PPP leader said. He is expected to meet PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to discuss political situation and Panama Leaks.
