At least four inmates of Gilgit’s District Jail overnight tried to escape by breaking the main gate of the premises.
According to officials, four prisoners tried to break into the jail, and two managed to flee; one was killed, and the other was arrested in a wounded state.
The official added that the security forces opened fire at the absconding prisoners, killing and injuring the other. However, two terrorists managed to break free.
According to local sources, the incident took place at District Jail Gilgit, where four terrorists involved in the killing of 11 people, including ten foreign tourists in Nanga Parbat Mountain, were kept. These tourists were assassinated in a Nanga Parbat base camp on June 24, 2013.
Following the incident, the security forces kick-started search operations in the area.
Taking notice of the jailbreak, the police high-ups suspended four jail officials, including jail superintendent.
