At least 5 individuals including three brothers died and 18 others were hospitalized after they ate highly poisonous sweetmeats in Layyah earlier today.

The incident took place when Umar Hayat, a resident of Chak 105/TDA brought sweets from a nearby sweetshop located at Chowk 111 on the birth of his grandson. After eating toxic sweets five persons died on the spot while 18 others fell unconscious.

The deceased and fainted persons were rushed to a local hospital for medico legal formalities and treatment.

Doctors said that three among the 18 victims were in critical condition and were referred to Nishtar Hospital Multan.

The deceased brothers were identified Ramzan 22, Irfan 20, Shahbaz 4 while the two others as Abdul Ghafoor and Muhammad Ameer.

The police have registered a case and started investigations.
