A new joint investigation team (JIT) has been formed to once again probe the 2012 Baldia Town factory inferno which claimed lives of more than 250 workers.
The probe team formed on the directives of the federal government is being headed by Additional Inspector General of Sindh Police Khadim Hussain. Other members include DIG Mushtaq Mehar, Director FIA Sindh Shahid Hayat and Rangers’ wing commander.
The team will submit its final report to the federal government after completion of the investigation.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, while chairing a meeting of provincial apex committee in Karachi, criticised police officials for being slow to file charge sheets in the Baldia town tragedy.
He vowed that justice would be served to the victims of Baldia factory tragedy.
It is pertinent to mention here that the first JIT report was presented before the Sindh High Court (SHC) on February 6 and the bench had made the report a part of the case proceedings.
The report stated that an alleged MQM worker named Rizwan Qureshi had confessed that he, along with his accomplices, had set the factory ablaze when the administration refused to pay Rs200 million extortion.
The report was strongly rejected by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
