Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met US President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss a potential peace deal to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, Europe’s deadliest conflict in 80 years. The meeting, marked by a lighter tone than their February encounter, focused on security guarantees and diplomatic pathways to peace.
Zelensky, previously criticised by Trump for his military-style outfit during a tense February meeting, opted for a formal black-on-black ensemble without a tie. The change drew praise from both Trump and a reporter, who noted, “You look fabulous in that suit.” Zelensky responded playfully, “You’re wearing the same suit. I changed,” sparking laughter. Since Russia’s 2022 invasion, Zelensky’s military attire had symbolised solidarity with Ukrainian troops, but recent diplomatic engagements prompted a more formal wardrobe.
Zelensky is a genius. He started his 1v1 meeting with Trump by thanking Melania Trump for sending Putin a letter asking for Ukraine's children to be returned. Zelensky then gave trump a letter for his wife from the First Lady of Ukraine.

Trump emphasised US support for Ukraine’s security, stating, “When it comes to security, there’s going to be a lot of help.” He highlighted Europe’s role as the “first line of defence” while pledging US assistance. However, Trump suggested that a ceasefire may not be necessary for a peace agreement, aligning with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s stance but diverging from Zelensky and most European leaders.

Zelensky described the talks as “very good,” stressing the importance of US security guarantees. He expressed openness to Trump’s proposal for a three-way summit with Putin to negotiate peace. The meeting followed support from leaders of Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Finland, the EU, and NATO, who joined Zelensky in Washington to advocate for robust post-war security measures for Ukraine.

The February meeting between Trump and Zelensky ended abruptly with no lunch served, highlighting strained relations. Criticism of Zelensky’s attire at the time drew backlash from Ukrainians, who have rallied behind their leader since Russia’s invasion. The Augus t meeting marked a more constructive dialogue, covering “a lot of territory,” according to Trump.
With European and NATO leaders backing Ukraine, the White House talks underscored the urgency of a lasting resolution. Zelensky’s push for security guarantees aligns with efforts to ensure Ukraine’s stability post-conflict, while Trump’s diplomatic initiatives signal a potential shift in US foreign policy.
