Mourning processions for Youm-e-Ashur, marking the tenth of Muharram-ul-Haram, have commenced nationwide to honour Imam Hussain (SA) and his companions for their sacrifices at Karbala.
To ensure public safety, mobile services are suspended, and security forces, including Pakistan Army troops and Civil Armed Forces, are deployed in all cities.
Today’s observance underscores Imam Hussain’s resilience and the sacrifices of his followers, who upheld their faith despite severe adversity.
In his Ashura message, President Asif Ali Zardari, inspired by Karbala, urged unity against cruelty. He called on the nation to embrace forbearance, hard work, justice, and support for the underprivileged.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized promoting equality, tolerance, and unity to confront national threats. He encouraged drawing on the courage and fortitude of the Karbala martyrs to overcome divisions and strengthen the nation.
The main procession began in Karachi at Nishtar Park, with broad participation across all demographics. At the start, the procession addressed the mourners. Security checks are strictly enforced at entry points to the procession routes.
In Lahore, the procession started from Nisar Haveli, with mourners performing “Namaz-e-Ali Akbar” the night before. The route is lined with volunteer-run food and water stalls, with stringent security measures around Mochi Darwaza.
Peshawar is hosting 12 processions, and to ensure safety, it has enhanced security, including 14,000 police officers and bomb disposal units. All routes are under close CCTV surveillance.
In Multan, the central procession, initiated by Imam Bargah Hira Haideri, features traditional mourning rituals and “Zanjeer Zani.” Over 116 Youm-e-Ashur processions and more than 130 majlis are scheduled, backed by substantial security forces and volunteers.
