Elon Musk’s X platform is launching a new transparency feature for user profiles. This “About this account” section displays key information to help users assess an account’s authenticity.
The new details aim to reduce inauthentic engagement on the social network. This move directly addresses the challenge of bots masquerading as real people.
What Information Is Now Public?
You can view this new section by selecting the “Joined” date on any profile. The page reveals several key data points:
- The account’s original creation date.
- The account’s geographical location (country or region).
- The total number of username changes.
- The date of the most recent username change.
- The platform used to download the X app (e.g., Apple App Store).
X’s Head of Product, Nikita Bier, first announced the plan in October. He explained that the feature helps users distinguish between genuine accounts and potential bots or malicious actors. For example, a discrepancy can reveal a fake account. If a bio claims the user is in the U.S., but the location data shows a different country, it should raise immediate suspicion.

X provides users with some control over how their location is displayed. You can choose to show either your specific country or a broader geographical region. This setting can be adjusted in the “Privacy and Safety” menu.
Furthermore, future updates may further increase transparency. App code analysis suggests X is developing a warning for accounts using a VPN to mask their location. This would alert others that the displayed “country or region may not be accurate.”
The company has not issued an official statement on the full rollout. However, Bier has acknowledged user sightings of the feature as it gradually becomes available to everyone.
