Elon Musk has initiated the rollout of X Chat, a comprehensive communication product integrated within the X social media platform. The company’s owner and chief technical officer announced the beta release on Thursday, making the feature available to a limited user group initially.
The new Chat system replaces the platform’s traditional Direct Messages functionality while introducing significant security enhancements. This development represents a major advancement in X’s communication capabilities and privacy protections.
X Chat incorporates multiple advanced communication tools within a single interface. The system offers fully end-to-end encrypted messaging alongside file transfer capabilities and disappearing message options. Musk confirmed the integration of audio and video calling features within the new communication stack. This expansion transforms X from primarily a public broadcasting platform into a comprehensive communication ecosystem.
X Chat’s Enhanced Security Implementation
Encryption represents a fundamental improvement in the new Chat system. Unlike the previous Direct Messages functionality, which required paid subscribers to access separate encrypted conversations, Chat provides default encryption for all users.

The platform now protects all historical messages with encryption, including conversations that previously lacked security measures. Musk has previously compared X Chat’s encryption standards to those of established secure messaging platforms, such as Signal and WhatsApp.
Early adopters of X Chat must establish a four-digit personal identification number during initial setup. This PIN requirement adds an extra layer of security that users must complete before accessing their messages. The authentication system mandates PIN entry each time users access the chat interface. Some early testers have expressed frustration with this repeated verification process despite its security benefits.
