Elon Musk announced on Saturday that X will make its new algorithm publicly available within seven days, including the full code used for organic and advertising post recommendations.
In a post on X, Musk said the company will repeat the disclosure every four weeks. Each release will include detailed developer notes explaining changes to the algorithm. He said the move aims to improve transparency and help users and developers better understand how content is ranked.
The announcement comes amid increased regulatory pressure from the European Union. Earlier this week, the European Commission extended a data retention order issued to X last year. The order concerns investigations into algorithms and the spread of illegal content and will remain in force until the end of 2026, according to commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier.
X has also faced legal scrutiny at the national level. In July 2025, Paris prosecutors launched an investigation into the platform over suspected algorithmic bias and alleged fraudulent data extraction. X described the probe as a politically motivated criminal investigation and said it threatened users’ freedom of expression.
Last month, the European Union imposed a €120 million fine on X for breaching transparency obligations under the Digital Services Act. Regulators said the violations involved the platform’s blue checkmark subscription model, insufficient transparency in its advertising repository, and failure to provide researchers with access to public data.
Musk publicly criticised the decision and responded with an obscenity in a reply to a European Commission post announcing the fine. His reaction underscored rising tensions between the platform and EU regulators.
By opening its algorithm to public scrutiny, X appears to be positioning the move as a transparency measure amid global regulators’ demands for greater accountability from major social media platforms.
