On Wikipedia, Elon Musk is categorized as a “Libertarian authoritarian,” sparking backlash from the tech mogul and his supporters.
Wikipedia describes libertarian authoritarianism as a political ideology that combines libertarianism with authoritarian tendencies. Adherents argue that democratic governments infringe on individual freedoms and advocate for abolition. The entry includes Musk and figures like Peter Thiel and Javier Milei, who are contemporary proponents of this ideology.
The term “libertarian authoritarianism” was first introduced in the 1996 British Journal of Sociology and later expanded upon by political scientist James Tilley. Publications such as Jacobin and New Statesman have since described libertarian authoritarians as rejecting democratic governance, seeing it as invasive and harmful.
This characterization has sparked debate, especially following Musk’s involvement in government initiatives like the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he helped establish during President Trump’s administration. DOGE’s mission, which includes reducing federal spending and cutting diversity and inclusion programs, has received praise and legal scrutiny.

In response to the Wikipedia entry, Musk took to X to call for a boycott of Wikipedia, urging his followers to “Defund Wikipedia!” He also shared a South Park meme to express his discontent.

Musk’s call to action continues his ongoing feud with Wikipedia. Just last month, he urged people to stop donating to the platform. In response, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales defended the platform’s editorial integrity, dismissing Musk’s claims of bias. Wales also suggested that Musk’s campaign might ironically result in increased donations from those who value truth and invited him to engage in constructive intellectual discourse with Wikipedia’s content rather than promoting division.
