After securing the NA-130 seat from Lahore in the general elections held on February 8, 2024, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) supremo Nawaz Sharif has taken his oath in Parliament but continues to work from home.
His limited presence in Parliament was noted; he attended to cast his vote during the Speaker of the National Assembly and Senate elections, yet has not actively represented his constituency or the public therein. Despite this, his influence remains strong within his party’s major decision-making processes.
According to party sources, Nawaz Sharif’s absence from Parliament is a strategic choice, mirroring a trend among several politicians who, despite winning elections, opt not to attend sessions. As the party president, his physical presence in Parliament is considered optional, given that his younger brother, the Prime Minister, manages day-to-day governmental affairs. Nawaz Sharif’s role has evolved into that of a kingmaker, where his operational base does not diminish his political clout.
Insiders reveal that Nawaz Sharif primarily resides at his estate in Jati Umra, directing party activities and governmental consultations as necessary. The ruling government reportedly requires his approval for all critical decisions. He is currently engaged in a comprehensive reorganization of his party, starting from the district level.
Despite his physical absence from the public sphere, Nawaz Sharif remains active in governmental meetings and continues to meet with foreign diplomats. Senior political analyst Salman Ghani points out that Sharif’s decision to work from home is partly due to health concerns and the demands of his age. Moreover, his dissatisfaction with the government’s performance, particularly its inability to alleviate public distress over utility costs, has been localized in several sessions.
Salman Ghani also commented on the limited decision-making power within the coalition government, which complicates the party’s ability to deliver significant public relief. This situation has led Nawaz Sharif to prioritize remote management over public appearances. Historically, Sharif’s tenure as Prime Minister was marked by proactive public welfare initiatives. However, the current political climate and his party’s performance do not align with those precedents, further justifying his preference for operating behind the scenes.”
