Former Inter-Services Intelligence chief Lt. Gen. (Retd) Faiz Hameed is now in military custody, a significant development as his court martial process begins.
On Monday, the army’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), confirmed this action related to the Top City housing scheme scandal.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced that the Pakistan Army has taken action against Lt. Gen. (Retd) Faiz Hameed following a detailed court of inquiry. This inquiry aimed to verify the validity of the complaints lodged against him in the Top City case, which was in line with directives from the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The ISPR noted that the army had initiated appropriate disciplinary action under the provisions of the Pakistan Army Act.
Additionally, the inquiry uncovered multiple instances of Lt. Gen. Hameed‘s post-retirement violations of the Pakistan Army Act. The findings have led to a general court-martial to address these violations comprehensively.
Background and Investigations
Reports indicate that the military had formed an inquiry committee in April to investigate allegations against the former head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for misuse of authority. The committee, headed by a serving major general, was a move towards self-accountability, formulated under directives from the Supreme Court and the Ministry of Defence.
In a written order, the Supreme Court highlighted the severity of the allegations, noting that they “cannot be left unattended” as if proven true, they would undermine the reputation of the country’s institutions.
The management of Top City had accused the former ISI chief of orchestrating a raid on the offices and residence of its owner, further complicating the legal proceedings against him.
The newly constituted inquiry committee will prepare its report based on its findings and present it to the relevant authorities, which will likely influence the ongoing legal proceedings and the public and institutional perceptions surrounding this high-profile case.
