The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that it has lost communication with its contacts at Al Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza.
The WHO expressed deep concerns about the safety of individuals trapped in the hospital due to the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the urgency for an immediate ceasefire.
The spokesperson for the Gaza Health Ministry revealed that operations at the Al Shifa Hospital complex, the largest medical facility in the Palestinian enclave, have been halted due to a lack of fuel. The WHO is particularly worried about the health workers, hundreds of patients, including those on life support, and displaced individuals inside the hospital. They reiterated their call for an immediate halt to the hostilities in Gaza.
Escalating Humanitarian Crisis
As heavy fighting continues between Israeli forces and Hamas, thousands of people, including patients and medical staff, are trapped in Gaza’s hospitals. There is a growing concern from medics and aid workers that the situation could lead to further loss of life if the conflict does not pause. Doctors Without Borders has issued a stark warning that hospitals could face catastrophic outcomes without a ceasefire or medical evacuation.
The director of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, Mohammad Abu Salmiya, described the hospital as being surrounded, with bombardments occurring nearby. This has severely hindered the medical team’s ability to work and manage the increasing number of casualties.
A doctor from Al-Shifa Hospital reported that Israeli forces were targeting individuals attempting to flee the hospital. The situation inside the hospital is critical, with a lack of necessities such as water, power, food, and internet, severely affecting patients and staff.
