On Monday, authorities arrested 26-year-old Luigi Mangione in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on suspicion of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Police found Mangione with an unlicensed gun, a silencer, and fake ID cards.
Last week, on December 4, an assailant shot Brian Thompson, 50, in the chest outside the New York Hilton Midtown on West 54th Street. Thompson was in New York attending his company’s annual investor conference. He sustained gunshot wounds to the back and right calf and, despite immediate medical attention, died from his injuries.

The New York Police have labelled Luigi Mangione a “strong person of interest” in the investigation. Mangione, an Ivy League-educated software engineer, hails from a prominent Baltimore family.

According to CNN, his grandfather, Nicholas Mangione, was a notable real estate developer in Baltimore, and his grandmother, Mary C. Mangione, is a recognized philanthropist.
Mangione holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, with his credentials verified by a university spokesperson, as reported by The Guardian. His social media profiles previously showed a four-year tenure at TrueCar, Inc. However, TrueCar has stated that Mangione has not been part of their company since 2023.
CNN also reports that Mangione is registered to vote at his family’s address in Cockeysville, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore, as verified by the state’s voter registration lookup system.
