Zoom faces competition as WhatsApp debuts screen sharing during video calls, elevating its video-call capabilities.
This update places WhatsApp in contention with renowned video-conferencing platforms like Microsoft Meet, Google Meet, Zoom, and Apple’s FaceTime.
Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, publicized this feature on Facebook and Instagram. During calls, the screen-sharing function lets users display content, from documents to photos and shopping carts.
First introduced to a few Android beta testers in late May, the feature is accessed via the “Share” icon. Users can showcase a specific app or their full screen, similar to Google Meet and Zoom functionalities.
WhatsApp has gradually released this feature across Android, iOS, and Windows Desktop. While not immediately available to everyone, it’s set to reach a broader user base soon.
Innovation and Evolution
WhatsApp has also rolled out a Landscape mode for video calls, providing a broader view than the existing Portrait mode and enhancing screen sharing.
WhatsApp’s video calling has existed since November 2016, but the app continues innovating its offerings. Other recent enhancements encompass picture-in-picture for video calls on iOS and the capacity to share short video messages in chats. The emphasis on video communication underpins these updates.
Screen sharing is a pivotal progression for video-conferencing apps, serving professionals and regular users. While Apple’s FaceTime introduced SharePlay in 2021 for screen sharing among iOS users, WhatsApp’s feature spans Android, iOS, and desktops.
