WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature for its Android app that enables users to import profile pictures directly from Facebook or Instagram, according to a beta version found by the feature tracker WABetaInfo.
The integration could streamline account setup by linking Meta’s platforms. It features cross-app functionalities, including unified avatars, and requires a connection to the Meta Accounts Centre.
Users can access the feature in the profile section of WhatsApp settings. To change a profile photo, tap on “Edit.” In addition to options for the camera, gallery, avatar, and Meta AI, new buttons for Facebook and Instagram are now available. Tapping on one of these buttons will automatically fetch the associated account’s photo. However, users must link their WhatsApp account to the Meta Accounts Center for seamless integration.

Linking accounts does not compromise WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption, according to WABetaInfo. This feature is optional, allowing users to maintain control over their settings. Meta is committed to ensuring data security across its applications, much like single sign-on systems. While critics highlight potential privacy risks, Meta’s track record with integrated features, such as Instagram’s avatar sharing, suggests a strong emphasis on user consent.
The feature is currently available in beta for Android testers through the Google Play Beta Program, with potential rollout in future updates. Testing on iOS may follow. WhatsApp typically refines tools based on user feedback, as demonstrated in previous cross-platform integrations.
This update enhances user convenience, aligning with Meta’s ecosystem strategy. With 2 billion WhatsApp users globally, it could boost profile customisation. Social media on X shows excitement, with posts like: “Finally, easy photo sync!”
WhatsApp’s photo import feature simplifies personalisation but requires account linking. As testing progresses, it promises smoother experiences for users across Meta apps.
