Meta’s messaging app WhatsApp has released a new Android update through the Google Play Beta programme. The update points to the development of a new feature, “thinking mode,” within Meta AI.
The feature remains under development. However, the discovery highlights Meta’s plans to strengthen its in-app AI assistant and improve its competitive position.
The current beta does not introduce visible changes for users. Instead, it prepares the groundwork for a major upgrade to Meta AI, WhatsApp’s built-in chatbot.
Meta AI currently handles basic questions and routine tasks. Its capabilities remain limited compared to advanced AI assistants. The upcoming update aims to close that gap.
Developers reviewing the latest beta version found references to a new interaction system. The system includes two distinct modes: fast and thinking. These modes suggest that users will soon be able to control how Meta AI responds, based on speed or depth.

What Is WhatsApp’s Thinking Mode?
Thinking mode targets situations where accuracy matters more than speed. When enabled, Meta AI will take extra time to process prompts.
The system will analyse context, assess complexity, and generate more detailed responses. This approach supports complex questions and nuanced topics.
Fast mode prioritises speed. It delivers short answers to simple queries with minimal delay. Thinking mode focuses on reasoning and structure. It produces clearer explanations and context-aware responses.
WhatsApp is also developing a toggle within the Meta AI chat. A thunder icon indicates fast mode, while a light bulb icon represents thinking mode.
The addition of thinking mode signals a broader shift. Meta aims to evolve Meta AI beyond a basic chatbot. If released publicly, the feature could position WhatsApp as a more powerful AI-driven platform for daily use.
