WhatsApp has launched a beta feature in version 25.16.10.70 of its Testflight program that allows iOS users to create AI-generated profile and group pictures.
According to WABetaInfo, initially available to select beta testers, the tool enables users to generate custom images based on text prompts. Plans for a broader release to ChatGPT Pro, Team, Enterprise, Plus, and Edu users are forthcoming
Unlike traditional photo uploads, this AI tool generates avatars, illustrations, or themed icons from scratch, enhancing user privacy by minimising the use of personal images. Users can access this feature through the profile photo settings or the group information menu. They can enter prompts to design visuals, such as artistic portraits or group logos. This approach addresses increasing privacy concerns by offering a secure and creative alternative.

The feature, integrated into WhatsApp’s settings, allows seamless image generation without external apps. Some stable iOS users report access, suggesting a phased expansion. The intuitive interface supports prompt-based customisation, making it ideal for users lacking suitable photos.
WhatsApp’s AI push aligns with trends in generative AI, competing with platforms like Telegram and Signal, which are also exploring AI enhancements, per Forbes. The feature builds on WhatsApp’s 2024 AI chatbot integrations to enrich messaging experiences, per Reuters.
As WhatsApp scales the feature beyond beta, it could redefine profile personalisation, balancing creativity and security. Ongoing updates will clarify access for Android and stable iOS users, with broader adoption expected by mid-2025.
