Recently released video footage from Lord’s Long Room has brought to light an unsettling incident involving Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja.
The cricketer was subjected to abusive comments from Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) members as he and his teammates made their way to the dressing room on the fifth day of the second Ashes Test.
The incident took place against the backdrop of a volatile match, where controversy surrounding the dismissal of England’s wicketkeeper, Jonny Bairstow, led to rising tensions amongst the spectator, resulting in boos and accusatory chants directed at the Australian players.
During the lunch break, matters escalated when Pat Cummins and his team entered the Long Room. The team was met with a wave of dissent from MCC members, who voiced their displeasure with Alex Carey’s stumping. In response, Usman Khawaja and David Warner confronted one of the abusive members, a scene initially caught on public footage.
MCC Apologizes for Unacceptable Behaviour and Suspends Members
Newly released video footage, shot from a different angle, reveals that Usman Khawaja was a specific target of the abuse in the Long Room. This led him to identify one of the abusive members to security while making his way up the stairs.
Disturbed by the incident, Khawaja expressed his disappointment in an interview with international media. He praised the usual demeanour of the Lord’s crowd and members but criticized the inappropriate remarks that day.
The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has taken decisive action in response to this unfortunate event. It has suspended the three identified members and released an official statement apologizing unreservedly to the Australian cricket team. While the MCC acknowledged no indication of a physical altercation from Pat Cummins’ post-match press conference, it strongly condemned the behaviour as going against the Club’s values.
