Vito, a pug from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, has historically clinched the prestigious Best in Show title at the 2024 National Dog Show.
This victory is the first for a pug since the show started its television broadcast in 2002. Vito stood out among over 1,900 dogs from more than 200 breeds at the event, which followed the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 28.
Michael Scott, Vito’s handler, captured a humorous moment when Vito looked towards him, seemingly oblivious to the excitement, right after announcing the win. “He’s very smug,” Scott noted, hinting that Vito might have been aware of his victory.
The 23rd National Dog Show, sponsored by Purina and held by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia, saw Vito surpass six other finalists. Competitors included Houston, a clumber spaniel; Monty, a giant schnauzer; and JJ, a Lhasa apso. This victory adds to Vito’s remarkable track record, including 25 Best in Show titles and top honours at the 2023 AKC National Show and the 2024 Westminster Dog Show.
Judge George Milutinovich commended Vito’s distinct appearance, especially praising the pug’s “beautiful head and expression.” “To look at a Pug is to put a smile on your face,” he remarked, acknowledging the breed’s charm and confidence.
Vito’s triumph follows Stache, a Sealyham Terrier who took the title in 2023. The show also introduced the Lancashire Heeler, a breed recently recognized by the American Kennel Club.
NBC will present the 2024 National Dog Show encore on December 1 for those interested in experiencing the event again.
