A bold Vertigo remake is officially in the pipeline, with Peaky Blinders mastermind Steven Knight crafting the script and Robert Downey Jr. stepping into James Stewart’s iconic role as John “Scottie” Ferguson.
Paramount will distribute this reimagining of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 psychological thriller, announced on March 4, 2025.
In an exclusive chat with The Direct, Knight called Vertigo “the best film ever made” and quipped, “You’d have to be an idiot to adapt it and that’s me.” He compared writing it to “diffusing a World War II time bomb,” highlighting the plot’s twists and the pressure of remaking a classic. Yet, he’s all in: “I love the weird challenge of giving it a shot.”

Downey Jr. won’t just star, he’ll produce alongside his wife, Susan Downey, and Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox. With Knight juggling the Peaky Blinders movie and SAS: Rogue Heroes, a rare break in his schedule fuels momentum for the Vertigo remake. No release date is set, but the script is in progress.
Reviving Hitchcock’s masterpiece with Downey Jr. and Knight at the helm promises a fresh spin on a cinematic legend.
