Max Verstappen matched Ayrton Senna’s record of eight consecutive pole positions at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola, marking a poignant tribute 30 years after Senna’s tragic death at the same circuit.
Verstappen expressed the significance of his achievement on this historical track, noting the special connection to Senna.
“Securing pole here, 30 years after Senna’s passing on this track, feels incredibly special,” Verstappen reflected. “Senna was phenomenal in qualifying, so it’s an honour to match his record.”
Oscar Piastri, who initially qualified second, faced a three-grid penalty for impeding another driver, advancing McLaren’s Lando Norris to the front row. As a result, the second row featured the two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, with Piastri starting beside Mercedes’ George Russell.
The qualifying session was tight, with Yuki Tsunoda, Lewis Hamilton, Daniel Ricciardo, and Nico Hulkenberg completing the top ten. Sergio Perez of Red Bull was absent from the early qualifiers, who expressed frustration over the radio.
Piastri initially celebrated his near-pole performance. “It’s tough to nail a perfect lap here,” he said before his penalty was confirmed. Norris commented on the narrow margins defining the session’s results.
The day’s events unfolded under clear skies at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, where Verstappen quickly set the pace. However, the McLarens soon showed strong form, briefly outpacing him.
Fernando Alonso had a challenging day, spinning off but avoiding a crash. Hulkenberg briefly led the timings before Verstappen and others surpassed him as the session progressed.
In Q2, Hamilton initially led, but Verstappen regained the top spot with a 1:15.386 lap despite a wide turn at Rivazza. The session remained competitive, with the top seven drivers within half a second of each other.
The final runs were tightly contested, but Verstappen secured pole with a stunning 1:14.746 lap, demonstrating his exceptional skill. This performance highlighted his driving prowess and set the stage for an exciting race day.
