In Punjab, Minister of Minerals Sher Ali Gorchani remains unaccountable after a leaked video surfaced, showing him soliciting funds over the phone.
Punjab’s Information Minister, Uzma Bukhari, defended Gorchani’s actions, claiming that although he solicited money, he never received any. Bukhari argues that the situation would have necessitated a different response if the funds had been received.
Consequently, she stated that the five-member committee formed is conducting merely an inquiry rather than executing an accountability process. This approach by Bukhari has been viewed by many as a flawed justification for not pursuing a more rigorous accountability process.
This stance was sharply criticized on the “Khabar aur Tajzia” program on Hum News, hosted by Muzammil Soharwardi. He challenged Bukhari’s logic, pointing out the paradox in claiming that the absence of actual transactions negates the need for accountability. Soharwardi, highlighting Bukhari’s background as a lawyer, argued that her defence was substantively weak and failed to address the ethical implications of Gorchani’s request for money.
Furthermore, Soharwardi critiqued the decision to allow one minister to oversee the accountability of another, likening it to resolving a conflict between a mother and daughter—an analogy to illustrate the lack of impartiality and potential conflict of interest inherent in the committee’s structure.
