The United States announced the approval of a $825 million sale of 3,350 Extended Range Air-Launched Cruise Missiles (ER-ALCM) and related equipment to Ukraine. The deal, funded by Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, and a US loan guarantee, aims to enhance Ukraine’s defence capabilities amid Russia’s ongoing invasion. The US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) highlighted the sale’s role in supporting US foreign policy and regional stability in Europe.
The DSCA stated that the sale includes 3,350 ERAM missiles, designed to improve Ukraine’s ability to counter current and future threats. The funding structure involves contributions from European allies Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway, as well as a US loan guarantee. This cooperative approach reflects a shift in US policy under President Donald Trump, who has emphasised greater European involvement in Ukraine’s military aid, moving away from the $65 billion provided under former President Joe Biden.
The DSCA noted that the sale strengthens Ukraine’s self-defence and regional security missions. By equipping Kyiv with advanced munitions, the deal supports US objectives of promoting political stability and economic progress in Europe. However, the sale awaits final approval from the US Congress, following notification by the DSCA on August 28, 2025.

The Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched by President Vladimir Putin in February 2022, continues to escalate, with recent deadly strikes on Kyiv killing 21 people, per Reuters. Despite US efforts to broker peace, including Trump’s recent summit with Putin in Alaska, Russia has shown little interest in ending the conflict. The ERAM missile sale aims to bolster Ukraine’s defences as Russian forces intensify attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure.

The sale underscores a collaborative Western approach to supporting Ukraine. European funding reflects a response to Trump’s call for allies to share the burden, as noted in his August 2025 statements urging Europe to lead aid efforts. The missiles enhance Ukraine’s ability to strike Russian targets, potentially altering battlefield dynamics. However, Russia’s rejection of EU troops in Ukraine, per TASS, signals ongoing diplomatic tensions.
