The United States has expressed its endorsement for direct dialogue between India and Pakistan, both known for their historic rivalry. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan has extended an invitation for discussion to India, conditioned on their serious commitment to the dialogue. The US State Department’s spokesperson, Matthew Miller, confirmed America’s longstanding support for such discussions during a press briefing.
PM Shehbaz Sharif’s Call for Valuable Engagement Amidst Historical Tensions
Despite the historical conflicts and three wars since their independence in 1947, PM Shehbaz is keen on fostering valuable interaction with India for regional development. However, the bilateral relations have been significantly strained following India’s decision in August 2019 to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, causing diplomatic interactions to reach a virtual impasse.
Sharif remains ready to engage in discussions, emphasizing the need for seriousness on critical issues, given that war is not a viable option. He underscored the detrimental effects of the past wars, citing increased poverty, unemployment, and resource scarcity for essential sectors like education and health. Sharif insisted on the importance of economic competition as a preferred method of contention within the region. With the understanding of the catastrophic outcomes of a nuclear war, Sharif urges India also to acknowledge the same reality.
