On May 19, 2025, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced an $800 million renovation project for the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in Flushing Meadows, the largest single investment in US Open history.
According to Reuters, the centrepiece is a transformation of the 24,000-seat Arthur Ashe Stadium, along with a new player performance centre and upgrades focused on fans. The project is set for completion by 2027.
According to Tennis.com, the Arthur Ashe Stadium will be reconfigured to increase courtside seating from 3,000 to 5,000, enhancing the spectator experience. Additional improvements include modernised facilities across the complex, fully funded without public money, ensuring no disruption to upcoming US Open events, including the 2025 tournament from August 24 to September 7. Preliminary work has already begun.

USTA Chairman Brian Vahaly described the project as “an exciting moment for our sport,” highlighting its importance in enhancing the US Open experience for fans, players, and partners. The state-of-the-art player performance centre will aid in athletes’ training and recovery, ensuring the venue’s global prominence.
The renovation aligns with upgrades at other Grand Slam venues, such as Wimbledon’s £200 million expansion. The US Open, the final major event of the tennis calendar, welcomed 957,000 fans in 2024.
According to the New York Post, this facelift aims to preserve its status as a premier destination. The scale of the project is similar to that of significant overhauls of major sports venues, such as the $5 billion construction of SoFi Stadium.
