Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one, beat Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. This was a rematch of last year’s US Open final. Sabalenka, 27, is from Belarus. She wants to be the first to win back-to-back women’s titles since Serena Williams in 2014.
“It was a tough match,” Sabalenka said. “Pegula played very well, and I worked hard to win. I’m happy to be in the final again and hope to win it all.” Sabalenka reached four of the last five Grand Slam finals. She broke Pegula’s serve in the sixth game of the first set but lost it 4-6. She then won the second set 6-3 and finished the third set with a strong forehand on her third chance to win.
