A security alert has been issued at the US Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, as American officials monitor planned large-scale religious processions across the country and prepare for possible disruptions.
The advisory says the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad and the U.S. Consulate General in Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar are tracking the situation. Starting March 10 at 12:00 p.m., all U.S. personnel will face movement restrictions.
Officials expect large crowds, heavy traffic congestion and a visible security presence. The advisory also warns of more checkpoints and possible disruptions to local mobile and internet networks in affected areas.

The embassy says processions may lead to road closures, blocked routes and traffic detours near event locations. It also notes that the likelihood, duration and severity of any related protests remain unclear.
As a result, U.S. citizens have been advised to avoid large gatherings and stay alert to their surroundings. The advisory adds that even peaceful rallies, processions, and protests can quickly turn violent.
The U.S. Consulate General in Lahore and Karachi continue to suspend all consular services. However, the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad is still providing services to U.S. citizens.
The advisory says people with scheduled appointments will receive updates if their appointment dates change. It also tells them to monitor their email closely for any further notice.
