On Wednesday, over 60 U.S. House Representatives addressed a letter to President Joe Biden, advocating for the release of political prisoners in Pakistan, including former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The group, led by Congressman Greg Casar, urged President Biden to prioritize human rights in U.S. policies towards Pakistan.
The letter emphasized the urgent need for Imran Khan’s release and called for an end to the arbitrary detention of party members and activists. It also requested that the U.S. administration work to ensure Khan’s safety and suggested that U.S. embassy officials visit him in prison.
The correspondence expressed solidarity with Pakistani American constituents, community leaders, and officials worldwide and supported Pakistan’s efforts towards a truly representative democracy.
Earlier in the year, Mr. Casar led about 30 members of Congress in expressing concerns to President Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken about the fairness of the elections held on February 8.
Musicians Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) supported Imran Khan in related news. In a recent tweet, he highlighted that Khan had been “illegally detained for over a year and was now in solitary confinement for three weeks, deprived of even basic amenities like walking.”
