The United States and China reached a framework deal to keep TikTok running in the US. Announced by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Madrid, the agreement prevents a potential ban set for September 17. The deal moves TikTok toward US-controlled ownership, easing national security concerns.

Bessent shared that the deal shifts TikTok to US ownership but gave no further specifics. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer noted a possible short extension of the September 17 deadline to finalise details. Bessent emphasised that the extension depends on the framework’s progress. The talks, part of broader tariff and economic discussions, ended after two days in Madrid.

“The big Trade Meeting in Europe between The United States of America, and China, has gone VERY WELL! It will be concluding shortly. A deal was also reached on a ‘certain’ company that young people in our Country very much wanted to save…” – President Donald J. Trump pic.twitter.com/EPLLGU5NhQ

The TikTok deal came alongside talks on trade, money laundering, and the illegal fentanyl trade. Bessent said another round of discussions is likely soon. US President Donald Trump and China’s Xi Jinping will speak on Friday to continue these efforts. Earlier, the US had warned of a ban if China pushed for tariffs or tech concessions in the deal.

TikTok, a wildly popular short-video app, faced a US ban due to concerns over Chinese ownership. This deal ensures millions can keep using it. The agreement also shows how US-China talks can address tech and trade issues, impacting global markets and app users. It highlights the balance between security and digital freedom.

The US-China TikTok deal marks a key moment in tech diplomacy, saving the app from a 2025 ban. As talks continue, the world watches how this affects trade and security.
