US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang held lengthy talks in Beijing, signaling an attempt to restore frayed US-China relations. Blinken, the highest-ranking US official to visit China in nearly five years, highlighted the importance of open diplomatic communication. Despite tensions, plans for Qin’s reciprocal visit to Washington and increased US-China flights were announced.
However, disagreements persist over issues like Taiwan, with Qin describing it as a core concern. Other contentious topics, such as US export restrictions on high-end semiconductors, human rights issues, and fentanyl production, were also addressed.
Before his visit, Blinken consulted with Japanese and South Korean counterparts, reflecting Biden’s approach to maintaining strong relations with allies. The Biden administration’s stance on China differs from its predecessor, balancing limited cooperation areas such as climate with more stringent policies like semiconductor sanctions.
