Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday voiced serious concern over a report issued by UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Alice Jill Edwards. They said it highlighted the “degrading treatment” of party founder and former prime minister Imran Khan during his incarceration at Adiala Jail.
The report, released on Friday, stated that the conditions of Imran Khan’s detention could amount to inhuman or degrading treatment. It urged Pakistani authorities to bring prison conditions in line with international human rights standards.
In a statement from its Central Media Department, PTI said the UN findings validated what the party had long maintained. It alleged that Imran Khan was facing inhuman, unlawful and politically motivated treatment.
According to PTI, the report reaffirmed that the former prime minister has remained in solitary confinement for up to 23 hours a day. He is under continuous CCTV surveillance. The party also cited restrictions on meetings with legal counsel and family. Additionally, they mentioned limited access to religious practices and the denial of necessities.

The party stressed that, under UN standards, solitary confinement exceeding 15 days constitutes psychological torture. Moreover, they added that Imran Khan has endured such conditions for several months.
Human rights are universal.

PTI said the treatment of a 72-year-old detainee with serious medical conditions, including a spinal injury and wounds from a prior assassination attempt, amounted to deliberate cruelty. This is especially true in the absence of what it described as adequate medical care.
The party demanded an immediate end to solitary confinement and humane detention conditions. They also demanded unrestricted access to personal physicians and full compliance with court orders allowing meetings with lawyers and family members.
“This is no longer just a political issue,” the statement said. “It is a test of Pakistan’s commitment to law, justice and human rights.”
Prime Minister’s aide Rana Ihsan Afzal rejected the UN rapporteur’s conclusions, insisting that Imran Khan is being treated strictly in accordance with jail rules and the prison manual.
“He has access to his children through the proper procedure, and there are no obstacles from the government,” Afzal said. He added that Imran Khan enjoys facilities “beyond his entitlement” as a B-class prisoner. These include exercise, food, and adequate living space.
Imran Khan has remained incarcerated since August 2023, serving a sentence in a £190 million corruption case. He also faces pending trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act related to the May 9, 2023 protests.
PTI has repeatedly raised concerns about his health. On December 1, his son Kasim Khan expressed fears that authorities were concealing serious information about his father’s condition.
However, Imran Khan’s sister Uzma Khanum, after meeting him on December 2, said he was “perfectly fine physically” but distressed over what she described as mental torture. She added that he remained confined to his cell for most of the day and had limited contact with others.
