President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed on Sunday that Ukrainian pilots have commenced operations using F-16s. This development comes more than 29 months after Russia’s invasion. The President announced this significant upgrade in Ukraine’s military capabilities as he visited an airbase, where the jets were on display.
“F-16s are now in Ukraine. We achieved this. I am proud of our pilots who are rapidly becoming proficient with these jets,” Zelenskiy stated at an undisclosed location for security reasons.
The introduction of F-16s marks a significant development for Ukraine, though the exact number available and their potential impact on the conflict remain uncertain. Despite these advancements, Russia has targeted bases potentially housing these jets and has threatened to shoot them down.
Lockheed Martin produces the F-16 jets, which Ukraine has long prioritized due to their robust capabilities and broad availability. These jets boast a 20mm cannon and can support an array of weaponry, including bombs, rockets, and missiles.
President Zelenskiy addressed the current challenges, such as the lack of trained pilots and sufficient jets. “The good news is we expect more F-16s and many of our pilots are undergoing training,” he said. He stressed the importance of expanding training programs for Ukrainian pilots and engineers with the support of international allies.
Zelenskiy described the adoption of F-16s as a shift to a “new aviation standard,” marking Ukraine’s move from Soviet-era aircraft to modern Western combat planes—a change driven by persistent diplomacy and numerous meetings.
Military analysts have pointed out that the range of the jets’ missiles, although unspecified, could greatly affect their combat effectiveness.
Moreover, Zelenskiy plans to convince neighbouring NATO countries to help intercept Russian missiles targeting Ukraine. He aims to discuss this strategy within the Ukraine-NATO Council to potentially establish a coalition capable of countering these enemy missiles despite potential concerns about escalating the conflict.
