A UK man, identified only as ‘Victim A,’ has been awarded £352,000 in compensation after being enslaved by the Rooney family in squalid conditions for over two decades.
The Metro reports that this man endured severe mistreatment and was forced to live in filthy caravans at the family’s traveller site in Lincolnshire.
The Rooneys, who ran a brutal regime exploiting vulnerable homeless men, subjected their victims to extreme physical abuse and forced labour, paying little to no wages. Living conditions were dire, with basic needs unmet and threats of death for non-compliance.
Photographs from the site depict the severe deprivation, showing dirty bedding, lack of food, and unsanitary living conditions. The victims often received only scraps to eat and were treated with disdain.
Sadly, fifteen other men who suffered alongside Victim A died before they could see justice served. The Rooney family profited immensely, accumulating over £1.5 million during this time.
In 2017, eleven family members were sentenced to a total of 79 years in prison for their crimes. The substantial compensation awarded to Victim A aims to provide financial security and support the care he needs. However, it can hardly compensate for the years of suffering endured under Rooney’s cruel captivity.
