The United Kingdom government has announced an alteration to its visa policies, which is set to take effect from February 22 2024.
The change will allow visa-free entry for citizens from Jordan and all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain. Travellers from these nations will only require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the UK. This follows the implementation of ETA for Qatari residents since November 15, 2023.
The British government’s move towards an ETA system represents a major step in simplifying the entry process into the UK. Tourists of all age groups must apply electronically for a travel permit priced at £10 and valid for two years.
The UK’s strategic shift in visa regulations is designed to streamline entry procedures and facilitate easier travel for citizens of these nations visiting the UK.
The ETA scheme is part of the UK’s broader initiative to digitize its borders by 2025, intending to enhance border security and improve the customer experience. The ETA serves as a digital travel authorization for visitors or those transiting through the UK who do not require a visa for short stays or do not currently hold another UK visa.
This scheme is expected to encourage visitors from the Gulf states and Jordan by reducing costs and visa requirements, thereby strengthening business and tourism ties. The significant economic contribution of Gulf visitors to the UK economy, with over 790,000 visitors spending £2 billion in 2022, underscores the importance of this policy change.
