Uber dismissed a driver who sent an inappropriate “Jaldi Aao Babu” message to a woman in Delhi following her complaint.
Delhi-based lawyer Tanya Sharma shared a disturbing experience on LinkedIn, detailing an incident with Uber. She alleged that shortly after booking a ride, she received inappropriate messages from the driver. The texts included one that read: “Jaldi Aao Babu yrr. Man ho raha hai” (“Please come fast babu, I’m in the mood”).
In her post, Sharma expressed shock and wondered how such incidents could happen in one of Delhi’s most affluent areas. “We live in the 21st century, and things are still so traumatic for people daily; even an auto driver can harass you while walking in broad daylight,” she wrote.
She continued by explaining that after receiving the lewd messages, she cancelled the ride and filed a complaint with Uber. She criticized the company’s grievance redressal process, saying that Uber only sent a sympathetic message without taking significant action. “Is that how it works?” she questioned.
After Sharma cancelled the ride, Uber initially promised an investigation and follow-up within 24-48 hours. Sharma, however, was frustrated with the delay and raised concerns about the safety of other women. “What if this happened to other women in those 48 hours? Are you ready to take responsibility for my safety and others?” she wrote.
Following her post’s attention, Uber swiftly banned the driver from their platform. Sharma thanked everyone for their support and confirmed that the company took action. “I’m grateful for the support, and Uber banned the driver from their platform to prevent further incidents,” she said in a follow-up post.
Despite this, Sharma faced online trolling from individuals accusing her of overreacting. In another post, she shared screenshots of these comments, emphasizing that simply banning the driver wasn’t enough. “People are justifying the driver’s actions, and Uber still hasn’t filed an FIR. The driver may still be roaming freely in the city,” she wrote.
