To “protect the health of future generations,” the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will require all Emirati couples to undergo premarital genetic testing starting January 2025.
The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) leads this initiative, collaborating with the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi, the Dubai Health Authority, Emirates Health Services, and Dubai Health. The UAE government approved the program during its annual meetings, following a directive from the Emirates Genome Council.
Initially a pilot project in Abu Dhabi in 2022, the testing program evaluated over 800 couples. It found 86% of the couples to be genetically compatible, while the remaining 14% were advised on additional family planning measures.
This program aims to detect genetic risks early, helping couples make well-informed decisions about their families. The tests examine 570 genes associated with over 840 medical conditions, aiding healthcare providers in mitigating chronic diseases like cardiovascular conditions and diabetes, thus improving long-term health outcomes.
According to MoHAP, the initiative will establish a comprehensive national genetic database to detect genetic diseases among Emiratis, enabling timely medical interventions. This effort marks a significant advancement in healthcare, aligning with the UAE Centennial Vision 2071.
