The Justice Department announced on Tuesday that a Pakistani man with alleged ties to Iran faces charges in the United States for his involvement in a thwarted plot to assassinate U.S. politicians or government officials.
CNN, citing a U.S. official, reported that FBI investigators believe the plot targeted former President Donald Trump and other current and former U.S. officials. The accused, Asif Merchant, 46, has been charged with murder for hire in a federal court in New York.
In related developments, US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle acknowledged to Congress significant security lapses. During her testimony before the House of Representatives Oversight Committee, she admitted that her agency’s failure allowed an assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania campaign rally on July 13. Cheatle, currently facing calls from Republicans for her resignation, described the incident as “the most significant operational failure at the Secret Service in decades.”
Despite Republicans’ claims that the Secret Service had withheld necessary resources, Cheatle affirmed that security measures for the former president had been intensified prior to the incident.
The shooting, which occurred at an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, resulted in Trump sustaining a minor ear injury, the death of one rally attendee, and injuries to another. The suspected assailant, 20-year-old nursing home aide Thomas Crooks, was fatally shot by law enforcement officers. His motives for the attack remain unclear.
