Renowned Twitch influencer, Kai Cenat, is dealing with multiple legal charges after an event he organized, intended to be a massive YouTube giveaway, led to tumultuous unrest in New York City’s Union Square. Akin to a storm surge, the event attracted a huge crowd of attendees, eventually evolving into a spectacle of widespread arrests and injuries.
Cenat, a luminary in the online world, boasts an impressive following on multiple platforms – with over 4 million subscribers on YouTube, a community of 5 million on Instagram, and an audience of 6.5 million on Twitch.
On Wednesday, he shared the news of the impending “huge giveaway” via a Twitch stream. Eager fans were enticed by the prospect of winning an array of exciting prizes, including Play Station 5s, computers, microphones, and various gaming accessories. Fans were invited to the Friday grand event at Union Square Park, starting at 4 p.m.
Uncontrolled Crowd and Ensuing Chaos
Contrary to Cenat’s expectations, the event careened off its intended course as an excessively large crowd began to gather, significantly disrupting vehicular movement. This prompted the NYPD to set a “Level 4” disaster response in motion.
The attendees, reported to number in the thousands, were soon caught in a whirlwind of aggression, targeting police officers and civilians alike. The situation further spiralled into a crisis as objects, including fireworks and construction materials, were hurled around, inflicting injuries on officers and attendees.
As law enforcement personnel desperately attempted to alleviate the disorderly crowd, 65 individuals, including 30 minors, were apprehended. Amid the rising tension, Cenat was also arrested for “safety reasons”. Further inquiries revealed that the streamer had neglected to procure the requisite permits for such a large-scale event and had not liaised with law enforcement in advance.
Mayor Eric Adams of New York City shared his perspective on the incident, suggesting a possible instigation by “outside influencers”. He emphasized that no social gathering should escalate to a level where it becomes a public menace, insinuating a correlation with responsible parenting.
