Turok: Origins is a third-person shooter that combines elements of dinosaurs and aliens and was showcased at Gamescom in Germany, marking a revival of the iconic franchise from the 1990s, as reported by AFP.
Developed by Sabre Interactive for Universal Studios, the game reimagines the Native American hero, Turok. The event attracted 357,000 visitors, making it the world’s largest gaming trade show.
Turok: Origins features both single-player and multiplayer modes, where players face off against AI-controlled enemies from both prehistoric times and outer space, according to IGN. Studio head Jesus Iglesias emphasised that the game pays tribute to the original 1997 titles, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, while also offering a cinematic and fast-paced experience reminiscent of Jurassic Park and Predator. With a peak development team of 250 people, the reboot aims to modernise the series following the lacklustre reception of the 2008 instalment.
Turok debuted in comics during the 1950s and gained popularity when it launched on the Nintendo 64. However, the franchise lost momentum after a failed reboot in 2008 and faded into obscurity. In 2020, Sabre Interactive, known for revitalising titles like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine and Evil Dead, took on the task of redeveloping the Turok IP. The announcement surprised Iglesias, who remarked, “It’s been sleeping for a long time.” The new game will launch on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, although the developers have yet to confirm a release date. Despite this, excitement continues to grow around the project.
Gamescom 2025, hosting 1,400 exhibitors, highlighted a $200 billion gaming market, per Statista. Turok: Origins taps into nostalgia while meeting modern demands for fluid gameplay, with 65% of attendees praising its visuals in a Eurogamer poll. The reboot aligns with a 20% rise in retro IP revivals, per VentureBeat, positioning Sabre as a leader in reimagining classic titles.
