Trump says UK help not needed in the Iran war in a sharp public message aimed at Prime Minister Keir Starmer, claiming Washington can win without British support and warning: “we will remember.”
In a Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump said Britain was finally giving “serious thought” to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East. He then dismissed the idea as too late, saying the US no longer needs the UK to win the conflict with Iran.
The Guardian has reported that Trump’s comments came after UK defence officials said preparations were being stepped up for HMS Prince of Wales for possible deployment, while stressing that no final decision had been made.
The row follows earlier tension over Britain’s initial decision not to allow US forces to use British bases for the first strikes on Iran. Starmer defended the move, saying he needed to be satisfied that any action was legal and properly planned.
The report says Starmer later granted permission for the use of British bases for what he described as defensive strikes against Iranian missile storage depots or launchers.
