Donald Trump is anticipated to nominate South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as the next Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security this Tuesday.
Sources from Trump’s transition team, including CBS News, confirm that Noem, a devoted supporter of Trump and previously considered as a vice-presidential candidate, is his choice for this key position.
Noem’s potential appointment marks a significant comeback in her political career, particularly following a drop in her popularity after the publication of her memoir, where she disclosed having euthanized an unruly pet dog. She defended her actions by emphasizing her capability to make difficult decisions.
The Department of Homeland Security, with a budget exceeding $107 billion—nearly 15 times that of South Dakota’s budget plays a pivotal role in immigration and national security. As secretary, the 52-year-old would manage critical agencies such as US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and oversee security operations along the US borders with Canada and Mexico.
This position is instrumental in executing Trump’s immigration policies, including restrictions and mass deportations of undocumented migrants. The Department also includes the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which provides aid during natural disasters.
While Trump has not officially confirmed Noem’s nomination, his selection aligns with his efforts to establish a cabinet that quickly reflects his administration’s priorities. Trump has also appointed former immigration official Tom Homan as the nation’s “border czar.”
The announcement comes after the current Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, faced impeachment by the House but was not convicted by the Senate. This position is crucial as immigration and border security remain pivotal in Trump’s administration.
