Former US President and leading Republican candidate Donald Trump has hinted at his choice of vice presidential candidate for the upcoming November election against Democrat Joe Biden.
In a Fox News Sunday interview, Trump refrained from naming anyone directly but outlined the essential qualities his running mate must embody. He emphasised the need for someone capable of stepping into the presidency if necessary, highlighting the unpredictable nature of events.
Speculation about who might secure the vice-presidential nomination has been rife once Trump clinches the Republican ticket. Trump underscored the primary criterion for his selection: the ability to assume the presidency in an unforeseen emergency. “Always, the consideration is who would make a good president. That’s always in your mind because emergencies happen, no matter who you are,” Trump, aged 77 and facing four indictments, remarked.
Currently leading in the Republican race with victories in Iowa and New Hampshire, Trump is ahead of other contenders like former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. Despite not participating in any Republican debates, the competition appears to be between Trump and Haley.
Trump indicated he is not ready to reveal his vice-presidential pick but shared insights into his thought process, mentioning conversations with figures like South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, whom he considers a strong candidate. Trump praised Scott’s performance but noted his low-key demeanour. Additionally, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has garnered Trump’s interest; Noem has publicly stated her decision not to run against Trump, believing in his unbeatable status.
Rumours have circulated that Trump is considering Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has left the Democratic Party to run for the presidency, as a potential vice-presidential partner. Both Kennedy and Trump have denied such discussions, with Trump explicitly dismissing these claims in his Sunday interview.
