Former US President Donald Trump levied criticism against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis following her admission of a “personal relationship” with the lead prosecutor in Trump’s Georgia criminal case, as reported by The Hill.
Trump alleged on social media that Willis, in coordination with the White House and Department of Justice, appointed a prosecutor with whom she had a sexual relationship to target him, suggesting this relationship resulted in financial gain for the prosecutor, nearly a million dollars, beyond what would be typical for other cases.
He concluded that these revelations entirely discredit the case against him.
In a recent legal document, Willis confirmed her relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, a point of contention raised by Trump’s co-defendant, Michael Roman, who last month accused her of a romantic involvement with Wade, rendering the indictment “fatally defective.” Willis, however, refused to recuse herself from the case, dismissing the motion as a tactic to attract media attention and defend Wade’s legal qualifications.
Wade, through an affidavit, clarified that he and Willis were merely friends at the time of his 2021 appointment, with their relationship becoming personal in 2022.
Roman, alongside Trump, has called for the charges against him to be dropped and for Willis and Wade to be prohibited from managing the case.
This controversy adds another layer to the challenges facing Trump, who is contending with four criminal indictments while campaigning for what could be his third consecutive Republican nomination for the presidency in 2024, with Nikki Haley as his current primary GOP competitor.
